Myst 25th Anniversary Collection

Last month it was reported that there are plans to relaunch the entire Myst collection on the PC. The good news for those who grew up playing the game is that this has since been confirmed, as a Kickstarter campaign for the Myst 25th Anniversary Collection has since been launched where players will be able to get their hands on the entire collection.

According to the developers, “To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the epic game that became your world, Cyan is offering a never-been-done-before, historical anthology of the complete series, along with some special, Atrus-approved, authentic game artifacts! The collection and artifacts will be packaged in a unique box – available only through this Kickstarter, with a limited run, for a limited time. (Seriously, the games will be available later, but the special packaging and artifacts will not be sold again!)”

Myst
  • In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Myst, developer Cyan Inc. Has revealed their plans to release a special collection of every Myst game. To help fund the development of those remasters.
  • I just saw the Myst 25th Anniversary Collection Bundle. I really want this. The problem is that I can't find any information in the listing that tells whether any of these games will run in 64-bit MacOS Catalina. Since I already purchased Myst IV, and it's in the bundle, I tried starting that - and it does not even start.
  • As much as we love to snark about Myst and its obtuse puzzles around here, it's hard to deny the nearly 25-year-old adventure series' influence on the industry. Developers Cyan are aiming to celebrate the upcoming anniversary with the release of a boxed collectors edition release of all seven games in the series, polished up, tweaked and tuned to make them all play nice with modern machines.

GOG.com is a digital distribution platform – an online store with a curated selection of games, an optional gaming client giving you freedom of choice, and a vivid community of gamers. I find it strange they handled the announcement of this on the Myst 25th Anniversary Collection kickstarter, rather than a Cyan news blog on their site or other channels as this is a wholly.

Myst 25th Anniversary Collection

So what does the collection include? This includes pretty much every Myst game that has been released to date, which includes Myst (1993), Riven: The Sequel to Myst (1997), RealMyst: Interactive 3D Edition (2000), Myst 3: Exile (2001), Uru: Ages Beyond Myst (2003), Myst 4: Revelation (2004), and Myst 5: End of Ages (2005).

However there is some bad news and that is if you game on a Mac, some of the titles released won’t be compatible with macOS. According to Cyan, “But for various reasons, maintaining some of those Mac titles now means rebuilding them from scratch – an option that, as a small indie studio, takes time or resources we just don’t have. And for games that were produced by other studios, even that option may not be possible.” The company will work towards creating more Mac compatible titles, but until then Mac gamers will be out of luck.

If you were born and/or raised in the 90's, you almost certainly know Myst. The mysterious franchise sparked the imaginations of a generation, and it's now celebrating its 25 anniversary! With this special birthday, the original creators of Myst, Cyan Worlds, Inc., wanted to release a special collector's edition. They took to Kickstarter and absolutely shattered their goal in a mere eight hours. What that means for the world is updated versions of all seven Myst games. Kickstarter backers will get some extra special goodies, though.
First, let's talk about the games. Perhaps you're not familiar with all the Myst titles. The Myst 25th Anniversary Collection will include: Myst: Masterpiece Edition, Riven: The Sequel to Myst, Myst III: Exile, Myst IV: Revelation, Myst V: End of Ages, Uru: Complete Chronicles, and finally, realMyst: Masterpiece Edition. These have all been upgraded for Windows 10 quality graphics and gameplay, thanks to GOG.com.

Even more exciting is what the various tiers of backing offer. Those at the tip top will get a replica of Gehn's pen and inkwell (that actually holds ink!), as well as the Linking Book. There are two versions of the book, one has a cut-out that shows the DVD box art, while a further expensive one actually includes a digital screen that will show video fly-throughs from the Myst games. To get this special book and pen/inkwell combo, you'll have to pledge at least $250 (which also includes digital and physical copies of the game). For just the book with digital screen, at least $169 (includes digital/physical games). For the simpler version of the book you'll have to pay at least $99 (includes digital/physical games). The only other available tier with rewards is $49, which gives backers digital copies of all the games from either GOG or Steam.
There was one other chance for fans to own a piece of Myst history, but all have already found their 25 lucky backers. At a pledge of $1,000 or more, these winners will be getting digital/physical copies of all the games, the Linking Book with animated screen, Gehn's pen and inkwell, and an original hand drawn concept sketch from Riven (with certificate of authenticity).
Cyan will be updating their Kickstarter through the remaining 43 days in the campaign. It's anyone's guess as to how much more money they'll get!
